Phone Stuck on 4G? Get 5G Working on Jio, Airtel and Vi

Your phone shows 5G only when your plan, coverage, handset and SIM setting all line up. Check each one, then switch 5G on for your brand.

Phone status bar showing 4G beside a mobile network settings screen with 5G selected as the preferred network

Quick answer

5G only appears when four things are true together: your operator has 5G where you are, your recharge includes it, your phone works on India’s 5G bands with up-to-date software, and 5G is selected on the SIM you use for mobile data. Pick 5G as the network type in your mobile network settings, restart, then use your operator’s app to check that your plan qualifies and your area is covered.

Bought a 5G phone and still see 4G in the status bar? You can usually sort it out yourself. Check the four things 5G depends on, in this order, then move to the fixes for stubborn phones.

From the Mobivault counter: When people ask at our shop why their phone won’t show 5G, it’s usually one of two things. The recharge doesn’t include 5G, or the phone’s network setting is still on 4G. Rule those out first; together they account for most of the cases we see.

The four things 5G depends on

All four have to hold at the same time. If even one fails, you stay on 4G.

Check 1: is 5G part of your plan?

  • Jio: Unlimited 5G is included in any plan that gives 2GB or more a day. On a 28-day cycle the cheapest such plan is ₹349 (2GB/day), and the 14-day ₹198 pack, also 2GB/day, qualifies as well. If you’re on 1GB/day or 1.5GB/day, add the ₹51, ₹101 or ₹151 “True Unlimited Upgrade” voucher, whichever matches your base plan’s validity. It stays active for that plan’s whole validity.
  • Airtel: Unlimited 5G comes with selected prepaid plans (₹349 and up, going by reports from August 2026). It doesn’t switch on by itself: open the Airtel Thanks app and tap “Claim Unlimited 5G Data”. If 5G starts using up your daily data after a fresh recharge, claim it again in the app.
  • Vi: Unlimited 5G is an introductory offer for now. It covers prepaid unlimited plans from ₹299 and postpaid plans from ₹451, works only inside Vi’s 5G areas, and carries a fair-use limit of 300GB a month.

Tip: Just recharged or got a new SIM? 5G may take a while to show. Operator activation can take anywhere from 4 to 48 hours, according to vivo’s support team, so wait a day before moving on to the heavier fixes.

Check 2: set your data SIM to 5G

Go into the settings of the SIM that carries your mobile data and set 5G as its preferred network. Labels shift a little between software versions, so treat these paths as a close guide.

PhonePathChoose
Samsung GalaxySettings → Connections → Mobile networks → Network modeThe option that starts with 5G (wording varies by model)
Xiaomi, Redmi, POCO (HyperOS)Settings → Mobile networks → [data SIM] → Preferred network typePrefer 5G

realme, OPPOSettings → Mobile network → [SIM] → Preferred network type5G
Google PixelSettings → Network & internet → SIMs → [SIM] → Preferred network type5G (recommended)
iPhone 12 or laterSettings → Mobile Data → Mobile Data Options → Voice & Data5G Auto or 5G On
  • Older software: Xiaomi phones still on MIUI call the first menu “SIM cards & mobile networks”, and older ColorOS builds on OPPO label it “SIM card & mobile data”. Newer vivo software may name the first menu Mobile network. The vivo route in the table follows vivo’s own instructions.
  • Pixel: If 5G still turns up only now and then, Google says Adaptive connectivity may be holding it back.
  • iPhone: You need an iPhone 12 or newer for 5G. 5G Auto switches to 4G whenever 5G wouldn’t noticeably speed things up, and that saves battery. Also check Settings → General → About for a pending carrier settings update.

Check 3: is there 5G where you are?

OperatorStatus in October 2026Coverage check
JioStandalone 5G marketed as “True 5G”; its 700 MHz spectrum pushes signal inside buildingsjio.com/5g or the MyJio app
AirtelBranded 5G Plus; non-standalone, so it runs alongside 4GAirtel Thanks app
ViRunning in selected cities since 2025, with more being addedVi’s coverage map, myvi.in/5g
BSNLNothing for phones yet, as mobile 5G is still being tested. Its one 5G service is SIM-free home broadband (Hyderabad, June 2025)—

Your city having 5G doesn’t mean your lane, your building or your bedroom gets it, and signal tends to drop indoors. When the coverage check in your operator’s app or map comes up empty for your spot, no setting will create 5G there. And if indoor calls keep breaking up as well, switch on Wi-Fi calling to route them over your home Wi-Fi.

Check 4: can your phone use India’s 5G bands?

The “5G” on the box doesn’t mean the phone supports every band your operator runs, and imported models are where this most often goes wrong. Open the official spec page for your exact model and look for these bands:

n78 (3.3 GHz band)The main 5G band for Jio, Airtel and Vi
n28 (700 MHz)Held by Jio alone; its long range helps 5G reach indoors
n258 (26 GHz)mmWave, used in India mainly for fixed-wireless home broadband; a phone can get 5G without it
Band details: PIB’s release of the DoT spectrum auction results. Jio’s 5G also needs phone software that supports standalone (SA) mode, which some imported models lack.

An operator app can also flag a handset as “device not supported” just because a newer model is missing from its list. According to vivo, that warning by itself won’t block 5G, so check the bands before giving up on the phone.

The icon still says 4G: next steps

  1. Turn Airplane mode on, give it 10 seconds and turn it off. A full restart also works.
  2. Install the newest software update. Early 5G support often arrives this way.
  3. On a dual-SIM phone, check that the SIM with the 5G plan is the one picked for mobile data. Data only travels over that SIM.
  4. Using a SIM from years ago? Samsung advises a 5G-compatible SIM. Visit your operator’s store for a replacement on the same number.
  5. Switch off battery saving and look again. On an iPhone 12 or 13, Low Power Mode keeps 5G off except for things like video streaming and big downloads; on the iPhone 12 it also stops standalone 5G. A Pixel’s Battery Saver turns 5G off as well.
  6. Last resort: reset the network settings. Pixel path: Settings → System → Reset options → Reset Mobile Network Settings. Read the warning below before you do it.

Warning: Pixel’s reset touches mobile network settings only. Many other brands use a single combined option, for example “Reset Wi-Fi, mobile networks and Bluetooth”, and it also wipes the Wi-Fi networks you’ve saved and the Bluetooth devices you’ve paired. Write down your Wi-Fi password before you run it.

5G questions, answered

The 5G icon is on, so why is my internet slow?

Signal strength and how busy the network is matter more than the icon. Apple says the 5G icon can, rarely, appear without real 5G coverage, and Google says it isn’t proof the phone is on 5G at that very second. Test speed in a few places; 5G is usually weaker indoors.

Is a new SIM needed for 5G?

Usually not. Airtel says the 4G SIM you already have will work on 5G. A very old SIM can be the exception, and the operator’s store can swap it for you.

Can I get BSNL 5G on my phone?

Not yet. BSNL’s only 5G service so far is SIM-free home broadband, soft-launched in Hyderabad in June 2025. Its earlier dates for mobile 5G slipped. In August 2026, BSNL’s Kerala head said mobile 5G was in testing, with December 2026 as the target, as long as its 4G network becomes stable first.

Does 5G drain the battery faster?

It can, especially where 5G signal is weak. That’s why iPhones have “5G Auto”, which falls back to 4G when 5G wouldn’t help.

PhoneSahi verdict

Do the two quick checks first: confirm in your operator’s app that your recharge includes 5G, then set the data SIM to 5G and restart. If the icon still says 4G, look at coverage and your phone’s band list before you reset anything, because no setting makes up for missing coverage or a missing band.
